Over the past year there have been 1425 calls for service in College Hill versus 1719 for Northside. The good news (sort of) is that calls for service for both communities is down slightly from the year before. These data are presented at LINK. This is not to say that there are not problems with loitering and littering. We need to stay active in dealing with this. It is fair to say that Citizens on Patrol, Court Watch, CPD officers, and our probation officers are doing a good job in addressing issues. Court watch currently has 51 cases being followed in the court system; mostly common pleas.
There will be an awards ceremony on Saturday, October 10, for Citizens on Patrol. I believe four members of College Hill will receive awards. College Hill continues to lead the city in hours walked that amount to a savings to the city of $750,000 annually. Several arrests have been made due to the vigilance of COP members. Court Watch is court on average 3 days per week in seeking prosecution of serious offenders and have been an integral part of getting help for those with drug, alcohol, and behavioral problems.
The real challenge is to get the community more involved in reporting criminal mischief that includes loitering and littering. The rule of thumb on loitering is to report a group of 5 or more hanging out at a given location. Truly this is an example of the squeaky wheel getting the oil.
